LEVEN TONGUES ARE SPOKEN across the realms of Beroert.  By historical happenstance, each spreads across a reasonably equal area; most spread across borders, and conversely nearly all kingdoms have a substantial minority speaking a language other than that of the majority.  In any town or province, there will be small numbers of inhabitants who speak other languages - immigrants who have settled in that area for economic or other reasons.  Most such settlers will have only travelled a short distance, from a neighbouring province perhaps, but some may have travelled a considerable distance.

Language - or more correctly, difference in language between rulers and ruled - has a bearing on the loyalty of the people, and the effectiveness of adminstration.  The proportions of the population speaking each tongue will fluctuate over time; setting up schools and universities, and other means of promoting literacy, should help to support and promote the 'official' language.  Settlers can also be forcibly moved to another area to introduce or strengthen the usage of a language in that region.
