Madam - I thought this past - am I played false
By Fate again? I would have called you friend.
I gave much - would again - you never deigned
To take. Madam, I am not what I was.
Ah, God - to be so shamed before my house!
To have so little left to make amend -
Though all that was, is less than what remained.
Lady, your honour could not be my loss.
Monna Giovanna, if he might heed
I'd try his lure, as God, who sees the fall
Of sparrows, knows, who brought us to this time;
I must deny, unwilling, what you need,
What Fate has changed - this gift that pays for all.
We all are changed. No peace shall now be mine.
